Our Roots run Deep

The Sellman roots run deep when it comes to the ranching industry. Butch’s parents, Marshall and Mildred along with Marshall’s brother Dick and his wife Helen established Sellman Brothers Ranch, in the 1940’s in Watrous, NM. The family was particularly involved in the Hereford breed, Granddad Marshall being the American Hereford Association President in 1964. Butch’s older brother Tom, his wife Shirley and their family was a big part of the success in New Mexico. In 1973, the Sellman Brothers decided to expand and relocated to Western Nebraska, to hard grass country. Butch married childhood sweetheart Becky in 1974, and they, along with Tom and his family, operated Sellman Brothers Ranch. In 1982, the brothers decided they could do more as two operations with their expanding families so Butch and Becky and children Adam, Ryan and Georganne became Sellman Ranch. The Sellman Family was very active in the Hereford Association as the kids were growing up, earning 14 National Champion and Reserve National Champion banners at Junior Nationals.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF BECKY SELLMAN

August 26, 1955 - September 5, 2010

Sadly, our family endured a life changing loss as our beloved wife and mother, Becky passed away suddenly and peacefully in September 2010. Becky had a great life, she loved her family and ranch life and enjoyed every day. She always had a smile and a southern laugh and will forever be in our lives.

Butch has remarried a wonderful lady, Gail Hartman, who was born and raised in Western Nebraska and has been in ranching all her life. Butch and Gail have very similar interests and backgrounds and Gail is very involved in the ranch activities today.

A Family Business

All of the Sellman children are actively involved on the ranch. Everyone does their part whether it be feeding, haying, calving, weaning, or working cattle. Oldest son, Adam lives on the home ranch and is involved in the day to day operations. He and wife Jodi have 2 children, Jake and Bailey. Jodi recently started her own home-based business, Sellman Stitch Ranch, specializing in custom embroidery.

Ryan is involved in all parts of the ranch and focuses his attention on the Club Calf cow herd. He and wife Sandi and children Kendall and Reid live 5 miles east of the home place. Sandi works full time as a Dental Hygienist and also enjoys the ranch operations when not at work.

Daughter Georganne, along with her husband Brent and children Wiley, Hannah and Kyle have purchased Tom's place, operating their own feeder calf operation. Brent also does custom spraying and farming, and takes care of the majority of the farming for all of the Sellman’s.

The Sellman grandchildren love animals and the ranch life too. The older kids are currently in 4-H and showing at county fairs, state shows and Junior Nationals.

We enjoy the ranching business and always demand our cattle be raised in a realistic program. We run 700 head of cows with 300 head of Registered Angus, 50 head of Registered Herefords, and the balance being commerical cows specialized in the Club Calf business. In addition, the ranch offers approximately 1000 head of feeder cattle, purchased locally, backgrounded on the place and marketed in late summer. The Sellman Ranch Annual Bull Sale, held in March, offers yearling Angus, Hereford, and Sim-Angus bulls, and 2 year old Angus bulls.
